The 12 volt mod for active guitar and bass pickups, like those from EMG, involves increasing the voltage supplied to the pickups from the standard 9 volts to 12 volts. This is typically achieved by using two 12-volt batteries in Parallel or a dedicated 12V module that fits in the space of a 9V battery.
